SENATOR SMITH: When the ship left Southampton, if you can tell? I want to find out the location of the lifeboats. MR. BOXHALL: They were equally divided on the boat deck, the port side and the starboard side. SENATOR SMITH: Fore and aft? MR. BOXHALL: Fore and aft. SENATOR SMITH: How many would be forward? MR. BOXHALL: There were 14 lifeboats. That would be 7 on either side. SENATOR SMITH: Were these lifeboats all along the side? MR. BOXHALL: Yes, sir. SENATOR SMITH: Continuously? There was no division between those amidship and those forward? MR. BOXHALL: No, sir. SENATOR SMITH: You say there were how many on a side? MR. BOXHALL: Seven on either side. I never counted them, but I think there were 7. There were 14 lifeboats and 2 sea boats. They were equally divided. SENATOR SMITH: Did you see any of these lifeboats filled or lowered on the starboard side, either forward or aft? MR. BOXHALL: I saw some one filling the starboard emergency boat at the time that I went and was firing of rockets. I fired them just close to the bows of this emergency boat. SENATOR SMITH: There were only two emergency boats? MR. BOXHALL: That is all; but that one I noticed, because these distress rockets are dangerous things if they explode, and I had to keep people away clear while I fired the rockets. SENATOR SMITH: On the port side you could have seen but one. There was one on each side? MR. BOXHALL: Yes. SENATOR SMITH: You could have seen but one, and that was at the boat deck. Was it being lowered? MR. BOXHALL: I saw it just before it was lowered, and then I fired a rocket after it was lowered. . . . SENATOR SMITH: . . Did you see the other boats of the same type lowered? MR. BOXHALL: I was in it when it was lowered. SENATOR SMITH: You were in it. When was it lowered? MR. BOXHALL: I do not know the time. SENATOR SMITH: Could you tell the order in which they were lowered, whether this was the second or third or fourth? |

LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Ces embarcations de sauvetage étaient-elles tout le long du côté? M. BOXHALL : Oui, monsieur. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Continuellement? Il n’y avait pas de division entre ceux au milieu du navire et ceux à l’avant? M. BOXHALL : Non, monsieur. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Vous dites qu’il y en avait combien d’un côté? M. BOXHALL : Sept de chaque côté. Je ne les ai jamais comptés, mais je pense qu’il y en avait sept. Il y avait 14 canots de sauvetage et deux canots de mer. Ils étaient divisés également. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Avez-vous vu l’un de ces canots de sauvetage se remplir ou descendre du côté tribord, à l’avant ou à l’arrière? M. BOXHALL : J’en ai vu un remplir le canot d’urgence tribord au moment où j’ai tiré des fusées. Je les ai tirées tout près de l’étrave de ce canot d’urgence. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Il n’y avait que deux canots d’urgence? M. BOXHALL : C’est tout, mais j’ai remarqué que ces fusées de détresse sont dangereuses si elles s’envolent, et j’ai dû tenir les gens à l’écart pendant que je tirais les fusées. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Du côté bâbord, il n’y en avait qu’un. Il y en avait un de chaque côté? M. BOXHALL : Oui. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Vous auriez pu en voir un, et c’était sur le pont des embarcations. Est-ce qu’on l’affalait? M. BOXHALL : Je l’ai vu juste avant qu’il ne soit affalé, puis j’ai tiré une fusée après qu’il ait été affalé. . . . LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : [...] Avez-vous vu les autres canots du même type descendre? M. BOXHALL : J’y étais quand il a été descendu. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Vous y étiez. Quand a-t-il été affalé? M. BOXHALL : Je ne connais pas l’heure. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Pourriez-vous nous dire dans quel ordre ils ont été affalés, s’il s’agissait du deuxième, du troisième ou du quatrième? |
